1479 - Catalonia merges with Castile, creating the most powerful kingdom in Spain. Catalonia is ruled by a Castilian governor.
1492 - Expulsion of the Jews from Spain by the Edict of Expulsion
1521 - Catalonia, and specifically Barcelona, is forbidden to trade with the New World colonies, effectively losing its status as the largest Mediterranean trade port
1640-1652 - The Catalan Revolt against Castile, also known as the Reapers' War, which resulted in defeat after Catalonia was betrayed by their ally France
1701 - The beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession, in which Catalonia sides with England and Holland and is subsequently left alone to fight against France and Spain
1713 - The beginning of the Barcelona siege
11 September 1714 - Barcelona falls, and the city is occupied by the Castilian army, with canons from the Citadel and the MontjuГЇc castle pointing at the city from strategic points. Catalonia loses its independence.
18th century - Generalitat is disbanded, Catalan language is replaced with Castellano, but the colonies trade ban is lifted, allowing Barcelona to slowly regain its trade influence in the Mediterranean
1770s - Barceloneta and La Rambla in Barcelona are built
The end of the 19th century - The Renaissance (Renaixença) of Catalan culture and language
1854 - The fortress wall in Ciutat Vella in Barcelona is knocked down
1860 - The Eixample expansion plan (Plan CerdГ ) is introduced
1868 - The Citadel is knocked down
mid-19th century - Industrial revolution in Barcelona
1888 - The Universal Exhibition in Barcelona. To mark the occasion, Arc de Triomf, the Ciutadella park, the monument to Columbus and avenue Parallel were built. This year is considered the beginning of the Golden age of Catalan Modernist movement
26 July - 1 August 1909 - The Tragic Week of riots and pogroms in Barcelona
1914 - The founding of the autonomous government of Catalonia
1923 - Coup d'Г©tat of General Primo de Rivera, dissolution of the Catalan autonomous government
1924 - The construction of the first metro line in Barcelona, running from the Catalunya metro stop to Lesseps in GrГ cia
1931 - The Republic is established in Spain, Catalonia is granted back its autonomy and Generalitat
1936-1939 - The Spanish Civil War. Barcelona was the Republican stronghold until the bitter end, which resulted in ferocious repression and reprisals after Franco's establishment as the dictator. Catalonia lost its autonomy once again and the Catalan language and flags were forbidden.
20 November 1975 - Death of General Franco
1978 - The adoption of constitution in Spain and the declaration of the constitutional monarchy. Catalonia once again becomes autonomous and assembles Generalitat (1980).
1992 - Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, mass restoration of monuments, the building of the Olympic stadium in MontjuГЇc and the tower of Tibidabo.
